When visitors walk up the dome of the Duomo they can see the Last Judgment frescoes. The dome’s architect is Bruneleschi. It is said that what inpired Bruneleschi is a desire to compete with his bitter rival Lorenzo Ghiberti, who designed the Duomo’s gilded doors.

The Basilica of the Holy Cross

This is the main Franciscan church in Florence. Some of the greatest artists and minds of all time are buried in the basilica, among them Machiavelli., Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei and Rossini. Inside the church visitors can marvel at frescoes by Giotto and Gaddi and works by Donatello.

The Medici Burial Church

This church contains the famous Michelangelo sculptures. The church was rebuilt by Bruneleschi in the fifteenth century and contains the tombs of Giuliano and Lorenzo Medici. The sculptures offer a unique opportunity to view Michelangelo’s work in its original environment and setting.
